Vets Choice Recall
April 12, 2007
The spike in interest shown by people coming onto the www.petwise.co.za website today demonstrates major interest in accessing more substantial news than that put out by the media today.
Most people interested in pets would have noted the newspaper articles and the radio news broadcast by SAFM Radio where Dr Steenkamp of the South African Veterinary Association (SAVA) confirms that the Manufacturer of "Vets Choice" has recalled their dry pet food products. There has been other radio stations carrying discussions and news on this topic but have not been heard by this office.
Royal Canin has acted responsibly in taking this dramatic step based on information fed back to them by veterinarians of an increase in dogs at various clinics all ill and fed on "Vets Choice". At this stage it is too early to show a definite link to the food or identify any causal compound or organism.
In the interest of pet safety Royal Canin has decided to suspend sales for the time being.
The PFI will let you have any further information that comes to hand through our website.
People who are concerned about their dogs and feed "Vets Choice" should contact their veterinarians for advice. If you are in the process of feeding from a bag of "Vets Choice" over the last month, the PFI believes you should relax as the feed is no doubt safe seeing as you have seen no signs of a problem to date. New purchases of bags opened in the last few weeks you must be concerned about and stop feeding.
