A bruised and battered crowned crane, and a chicken-pinching caracal had a taste
of la dolce vita yesterday thanks to the Pietermaritzburg SPCA, who
rescued the animals in two separate incidents. It was a case of "all in a
day's work" for SPCA staff who were called out to rescue the crane from the N3
highway, where it had apparently flown into power lines, and the caracal from
the jaws of death, in the form of two highly-motivated, chase Valley boerbuls. |

This is no ordinary game of fetch, and Edie and Panda are no ordinary
human-animal partnership. Panda is a miniature guide horse, and Edie is
her blind handler. Since 2003, Panda has helped Edie navigate stairs,
pavements and suburban streets. Edie calls her partnership with Panda an

Curious by nature, these little desert-dwelling creatures come in variety of
sizes and colours. Of the 23 different species of hamsters, two types are
regularly available in South Africa, namely Syrian hamsters and Russian dwarf
hamsters. The Syrian is larger, has a nice plush coat and is also known as the
teddy bear hamster. They come in lots of different colours with various colour
patterns. The Russian, on the other hand, is smaller and usually comes in
various shades of grey or brown as well as black or cream. It is more docile
than the Syrian and less likely to bite. |

Since 2003 the SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary has cared for and looked after three
prides of rescued lions. Over the years we have managed to overcome all the
financial obstacles and have managed to secure funding to feed and care for the
lions. However it seems that the growing international financial crisis has
finally reached our sanctuary and to date very little funding has been secured
from our various appeals to continue to feed the lions. |
